Trip Report

We started from Frog Camp Friday afternoon. The snow had decreased considerably from the previous weekend, but the Sunshine Shelter area where we set up camp was still laden with snow. The next morning was clear and sunny. We started hiking up the mountain at 6:30 a.m. On the exposed snowfield on the north ridge near the summit we set a fixed line anchored by pickets at each end. We appreciated Glenn Meares' loan of his rubber mallet to pound in the pickets. Such a mallet would be a nice addition to the Obsidian's climbing equipment. The first "party" led by John Jacobsen included Jerry Mohler, Shirlynn Spacapan, Lee Lashway, Deanna Millard, and Sally Grosscup summitted at 11:15 a.m. The last "group" (Mike Nichols, Rick and Spike Grosscup) arrived at 1:00 p.m. Jerry and Boyd chose not to summit, but enjoyed the view from the ridge below. After lunching at the summit and evaluating the clouds we started down the mountain. We had some "wild" glissades as there was lots of snow. Part of the group (Lee, Deanna, Jerry, Boyd and Jean) exited Saturday evening while Mike, Shirlynn, John, Rick, Sally and Spike spent the night. We dined on "hors d'oeuvres" of left-over breakfast and lunch food followed by a thunder and rainstorm for entertainment. The thunder continued through the night, but we were saved from more rain. We hiked out in advancing fog. Climb leader was Sally Grosscup.
