Trip Report

On Saturday, July 20 five Obsidians drove to the appropriately named Obsidian Trailhead and made the hike to Arrowhead Lake. There was still lots of snow on the ground at Sunshine Meadows and we were pleased to find a patch of bare ground for camping and one end of the lake melted out for water. After a relaxing afternoon we went to bed early and rose long before the sun to begin our ascent of the Middle Sister. The abundant snow and cool conditions allowed us to use our crampons soon after we left camp all the way to the summit. We climbed to and across the Renfrew Glacier and then more or less directly up the north-west slope, to top out under a bright mid-morning sun and brilliant blue sky. The pleasure of a beautiful day and magnificent view was enhanced by comradeship and sharing a moment of achievement with Dan Bates who, with this summit, earned both his three peaks and ten peaks awards. Congratulations Dan! The descent (via the north ridge and Renfrew Glacier) and hike out were pleasant and uneventful. All were tired but satisfied when we reached the cars and the road back to the Valley. Climbers who enjoyed their moment in the sun were Dan Bates, Larry Huff, Royal Murdock, Brian Hoyland and Doug Nelson (leader).
