Trip Report

By popular request this turned out to be a tenderfoot climb. For several climbers in the party it was a first climb. The weatherman cooperated with sunshine during most of the seven mile pack-in to Camp Lake and during part of the climb. A brisk wind greeted us at camp on Saturday, stayed with us during the climb on Sunday. The wind did not dampen the enthusiasm of the party however, and several rest stops were enjoyed during the 5½ hour ascent via the southeast ridge. This route affords good views of eastern and western valleys, South and North sisters, and Diller Glacier with its many crevasses. Blooming rock plants softened the monotony of the rock scramble.

Soon after our return to camp, the wind velocity picked up and low clouds were blown through the 6952 ft. area all night. Blowing sleet froze to the tents in the pre-dawn hours so it was nice to sleep in on Monday. By 8 a.m. the wind stopped, skies were clear, and we basked in sunshine around the lake and during the pack-out to Pole Creek trail head. Connie, Millard, Dorothy and Tess expressed special appreciation for the efforts of Kate & Kim, for their help in finding a sheltered location for their tents during the Sunday night storm.

The leader was very pleased with the performance of the party, considering the rigors of the climb route, after telling them before the climb that it was an easy route. The entire party of 13 made the summit: Mary Bridgeman, Kate Canant, Peter Cecil, Kim Everett, Dorothy Hayes, Dot Leland, Leona Mattson, Richard and Robert Scherer, Tess Smth, Connie and Milliard Thomas, and Wes Prouty, leader.
