Trip Report

We started at the Obsidian trailhead under light rain since the Old McKenzie Hwy. had only been open two weeks. We ran into deep snowpack drifts along the trail before and after the lava flow. We set up camp at Arrowhead Lake with the entire surrounding area covered deep in snow. Cloud level was at about 800 ft. with the tops of both North and Middle Sister obscured. We turned in the evening hoping it would clear.

We awoke at 5:00 a.m. to a clear, star studded sky and left camp at 6:30 with crampons. We ascended snowfields and Renfrew Glacier to the saddle between North and Middle Sister. There we negotiated a steep, icy snowfield at the base of the north ridge of Middle Sister. We were on top at 11:00 with the summit all to ourselves under clear, sunny skies and with no wind. About a half hour later we were joined by a group from Washington State that summited via the south ridge. After a sunny rest on top we descended Renfrew Glacier with a break for a snowball fight. We returned to camp, packed up and out and were back to the trailhead around 6:00 p.m. Summiting were David Donahue, David Klemp, Greg Milliman, Kelly Snyder and Obsidians Don Ladigin and Dick Snyder (leader). Climbing but not summiting were Rod & Shawn Madison and John Oster.
