Trip Report

We left Eugene at 8:00 a.m. Saturday (16th) morning under blue skies. Arrived at Frog Camp at 10:00 a.m., put packs on and headed for Sunshine Meadow at our pace. As soon as a campsite was found we set up camp then layed around for awhile. When we were all rested Ewart Baldwin took us over to the Obsidian field and explained how it and the rest of the lava formations were formed. After a hearty dinner and a little more site seeing we went to bed early. Got up at 5:00 a.m.; ate and got out of camp at 6:00 a.m. under overcast skies. We took our time on the way up over rocks and snowfields. Then we went across Renfrew Glacier and a few narrow crevasses - Margaret Baldwin stepped into one up to her knee. At about 8500 to 9000 feet the fog that surrounded the mountain came down on us and with it brought the wind and the cold all the way to the top where we got behind the rocks to keep warm. Once in awhile the fog would break so you could see. Then it would close in again. After about 45 minutes we headed down on the glacier and snowfield and into camp where we had an excellent group of climbers consisting of Ewart and Margaret Baldwin, Elaine and Dick Barrar, Tim Cook, Clara Emlen, Don Gott, Merv Hisel, Rich Litchfield, Charlene Marshall, Teresa Taylor, Bill Ray and leader Don Payne.
