Description:

Meet at WinCo Foods parking lot, 2815 Chad Dr., Eugene . From there we'll carpool via Hwy 126, 242 and further.
We’ll explore Millican Crater, a high pile of dark pyroclastic scoria.
From the trailhead we’ll hike trail #4066 and then scramble up to the top of Millican Crater for excellent 360° view, then back on the #4066 to complete lollipop loop.

Trip Report

It was noon on Saturday, when two of us reached the east side of the Millican Crater trail. Avidity was our best friend on the spooky, hot, and dusty trail #4066.
Lightning changed the entire area in the fall of 2012 when the Pole Creek fire spread over 40 square miles and consumed thousands of lodgepole pine and subalpine pine. Ghost trees are still standing and thousands more have already fallen, making large areas almost impassable. Instead of a planned Millican Crate exploratory scramble we decided to go further in search of a good view. Our destination was the southeast flank of Harlow Crater from where we had a pretty good view of Three Sisters, and Broken Top. The thermometer showed 94°F when we returned to the trailhead.
After a well-deserved dinner in Sisters we drove to the Black Crater trailhead on HWY 242 where we had a spectacular sunset and peaceful night.
