Spencer Butte Sunset/Moonrise

UPDATE: Changing the hike to Spencer Butte. Mt. Pisgah is closed. Meet at the Spencer Butte Trailhead/Paved lot. Please arrive before the departure time to check in. Moonrise is 5:11 and sunset is 5:52 (Full Moon is the next day, Feb 24 ) We will hike the main trail to the top for moonrise. I plan for us to start down before the sunset so we are not hiking on the steps in the dark. You would have time to make it to the program at the Lodge. Or volunteer for Trail Maintenance/storm cleanup on the main trail the next morning. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have never hiked Spencer Butte-- there are 132 steps.

Trip Report

With Pisgah still closed and with the balmy weather, the Spencer Butte parking lot had just a few spaces left for our group. The steps were clean from one of our previous trail maintenance outings and the toilets are now repaired. We layered clothing Obsidians met many hikers wearing shorts! Since Spencer Butte is 500 feet higher than Pisgah, I should have had an earlier departure for the 5:11 moonrise. What a surprise to reach the summit and not have to wait for the celestial event. Other hikers did not even notice that the moon was visible. It was so peaceful and warm that it was hard to start down before sunset at 5:52. Rewarded with more views of the moon higher up in the sky and a striking red sunset through the trees, we were safely back at the parking lot at 6:15. Having led 88 Pisgah sunset hikes, I was surprised how Spencer Butte welcomed us. Time for a change?
