Mount McLoughlin Climb

  • Start date: 08/20/2025

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 08/20/2025

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

After crossing the creek at the trailhead on a small log suspended 8-10 ft above the creek, we will hike a couple of miles on maintained trails, then follow a typical class 2 climbers trail (= loose, rocky) to the summit. A few very short, easy scrambles will likely be encountered along the way. Note that this is a strenuous climb that gains about 3900 ft elevation in just over 4 miles. Participants should be in good physical condition and capable of sustaining high effort for 4-6 hours.

We will depart the trailhead at 5:30 AM, thus it is recommended that participants spend the night nearby rather than make the 3.5-4 hour drive from Eugene the same day. Dispersed camping is available as are several USFS campgrounds within 20-30 minutes of the trailhead.

Trip Report

5 ambitious Obsidians headed out by headlamp to climb Mount McLoughlin by the standard ascent route. After successfully crossing the log over the gushing creek at the trailhead, we followed maintained trails to the climbers \'trail\'. As we ascended the rocky, loose \'trail\' one member opted to stop and spend several hours enjoying where they were while the other four continued for several hours to the summit. It was a picture perfect day with stunning views of Mount Shasta to the south and distant views of Mt. Thielsen, Diamond Peak, and the 3 Sisters to the north. While we sat and enjoyed lunch and sun, 4 Sharp Shinned Hawks cavorted around us, seemingly at play but probably feeding on the numerous butterflies that were fluttering past. In all a most excellent day. Steve Davis, Jane Leng, Lumin Browning, Ken Robinson, Greg Milliman.
