Description:

This climb starts at the Vivian Lake trailhead off of FS23, Hills Creek Rd. The first 4+ miles are on a maintained, well-graded trail, taking us past Notch Lake and up to Divide Lake. This stretch of trail features a LOT of huckleberry, if we're lucky we will find a few ripe ones available for snacking. From Divide Lake we take a rough, steep, class 2 climbers trail to the base of the rock and the southern gully. Helmets go on and we start our rocky, loose, class 2 & 3 scramble to a notch at the head of the gully. We cross the 3rd class ridge and scramble up loose, rocky, class 2+ territory to the summit. There is significant exposure near the top of the gully and across the ridge to the summit. The descent retraces the ascent route.

We will meet at 7:00 AM on the south side (next to OR58) of the Dari Mart parking lot in Pleasant Hill. For those wishing to share transportation the suggested donation to drivers is $11.55.

Trip Report

Eight adventurous Obsidians tackled Mount Yoran on a cool Fall day. Starting in the early morning chill we quickly warmed up on our pleasant hike to Divide Lake. We took a short break to refuel, then headed up the steep climbers trail to the base of the gendarme guarding the route. There, we put on helmets, dropped trekking poles and began our initial scramble up the couloir to the ridgeline. In order to reduce the odds of beaning each other with inadvertently kicked rocks we broke into 3 smaller groups led by Isac, Miranda, and Steve, then took turns ascending to the ridge top. Once past the steep, short, 3rd class scramble, we headed up and across the E. face to another loose section where we again took turns climbing to the summit ridge. After crossing the airy step to the top we enjoyed crystal clear views from Mt. Hood to Diamond Peak, all the peaks sporting a fresh dusting of snow. Summit cookies were consumed and we headed back down following the same small group protocol to avoid hitting each other with rocks. This was a nimble group and only one rock was dislodged during the climb, a testament to stepping with intent. Upon arriving back at Divide Lake we found a spot with a view and had an extended snack break before heading back down to the trailhead.
