Description:

Leave for Hood Friday evening, meet and prep gear in the Timberline parking lot and start climbing in the very early AM. Return to town late afternoon /early evening on Saturday. Be prepared to carry some group gear.

Ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, 3 locking carabiners, rappel device, 2 prusik cords, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), minimum 2.5 liters of water, emergency shelter (small tarp or bivy bag, etc.), mountaineering boots, boot gaiters, warm gloves +extra pair, rain jacket, pants you are comfortable glissading in (old rain pants work great), extra emergency clothing (dry socks, insulating layers, warm hat, neck gaiter etc.), food for 24 hours, trekking poles recommended.

Trip Report

Warm temps and soft snow made this climb a bit more challenging. 2 of our team opted to turn back at the top of the Palmer. We took the Pearly Gates route to avoid the crowds. A few more crevasses had opened in the vicinity of the bergshrund and we placed pickets to protect the bridges. The remaining team of 4 took a quick break on the summit and then hurried down via Old Chute as the snow was getting softer by the minute. 11.5 hours car to car. All in all a good day on the mountain with a good team. Thanks to Bill for the solid assist.
