Description:

This trip will be the standard (south spur) route on Mt. Adams. We will drive Saturday to the trailhead and hike up to the 'lunchcounter' (around 5 miles, 3700ft elevation gain). There will be an alpine start on Sunday morning (~2am wake up) with the plan of climbing to the summit, glissading down to camp, breaking camp, hiking out, and driving back to Eugene all on Sunday. Expect a late return to Eugene Sunday evening. This trip requires the ability to self arrest and safely handle snow travel on crampons. A high level of physical fitness is required. A love of glissading is optional, but encouraged.

A few logistics: A 'Cascades Volcano Pass' is required to climb Mt. Adams in the summer months. These are $15 per person. We will stop at the Mt. Adams Ranger Station on the drive to the climb to get our permits and our 'blue bags'. Exact change or check is required for the volcano pass - plan ahead for cash for the trip fee, the volcano pass, and car pooling costs.
The road into the trailhead is notoriously rough and can be crowded in the summertime. We'll carpool as best we can.

Trip Report

Next year this trip will be titled 'Glissading 202'. Or perhaps 'Epic Glissades'. Never mind the nearly 7,000 feet climbed to earn this downhill bliss.
We started our climb on a beautiful Saturday morning. Our first challenge was to find a place to park at the crowded Cold Springs Trailhead. With a creative solution and the wheels chocked, we headed up towards the 'lunch counter'. Reports of late season snow had us concerned about what conditions we would find. We were pleasantly surprised to pitch our tents on dry rock and find something another climber referred to as 'running water'. Choosing an alpine start, we were rewarded with good crampon conditions, the sunrise induced shadow of Mt. Adams in the clouds below, and a sparsely populated summit with seemingly endless views. This was where the trip really began. Our reward for the climb was nearly 4,500 vertical feet of glissading extending well below the lunch counter! All five in our party made it to the summit with 4 of us being the first time on Mt. Adams.
