Trip Report

Mt. Adams at 12,307 feet is second highest in Washington, next to Rainier at 14,410 feet. We camped at Cold Springs (6,500') on Friday in drizzly weather. Saturday was clear and we packed up to the lunch counter (9000+'). Dick, Carole and Lee decided to take advantage of the clear weather and climbed to the summit saturday afternoon. Sunday Sally, Kevin and I summited with Charlotte cheering us on. From the ‘lunch counter' to the false summit (11,500') climbers encountered a 45°–50° snowfield with rocks to left and right. Over the false summit, one drops 300 feet to flat and then a gradual up of 1000' to the true 12,307 foot summit. The wind chill factor was approximated at zero. On the summit is an old shelter filled with snow. Climbers were sitting on the roof signing registers, sunning themselves, chatting and looking at awesome Mt. Rainier to the north, Mt. St. Helens to the west, puffing a little bit, and Mt. Hood to the south standing clear. A great glissade down, but watch out for too much speed. This has to be one of my most enjoyable, exhilarating, picturesque climbs and where was my camera? Yup, down at base camp. Oh, darn! Well, the picture is well embedded in my mind. Thanks to my son, Kevin, for co-leading. Climbers were Sally Grosscup, Dick Hildreth, Carole Kompanik, Lee Lashway, Charlotte Mills and co-leaders Kevin and Parker Riddle.
