Trip Report

Group left Eugene Friday afternoon, picking up Glenn in Albany. All went by REI at Jantzen Beach for "Big Sale." Dinner in Hood River and then camped in State Park east of town - learned late very, very near railroad tracks. After breakfast Saturday morning our group drove up the White Salmon River Valley to Troutlake, Washington where we turned off for Mt Adams Wilderness area. We went onto the Yakima Indian Reservation, past Bench Lake and up to Bird Creek Meadows parking lot. e hiked up to Hellroaring Canyon Overlook - great falls, sights down into valley, but Adams in misty clouds. Hiked up through Kromholtz zone to about 7,200 feet where we took a break. Then over a steep moraine and onto the Mazama Glacier. We trekked to Sunrise camp area (about 8,200'} and picked our camp sites in moraine silt. We explored the bergschrund and crevasse - some ‘playing' in ice fall.

Up next morning (except leader whose stomach remained on strike at altitude this summer) and off by 3 a.m. Lee took group up and made top by 8 a.m. (I watched them down thru binoculars late morning.) All rest made top and enjoyed the view - Rainier south to the Sisters and Broken Top. To cars by 3 p.m. and in Eugene about 7:30 p.m. All ready for Adams again next year.

Climbers were Rick Ahrens, Tim Cook, Sally Grosscup, Lee Lashway, Ray Smith, Glenn Meares, Bob Nickel, Jerold Williams with leader Mark Perrin observing.
