Trip Report

I suppose the bad weather in the Shasta area kept others from signing on for this one. However, I was able to substitute a spectacular climb of the south side of Mt. Adams for the one brave Obsidian and three brave Chemeketans who were game for any worthwhile experience this weekend. After a brief breakfast in Hood River, we drove to the trailhead and began our trek to high camp. Two water stops in the valley and on the ridge put us at 9000 ft., bedded down and watching for the eclipse about 7 p.m. Saturday.

We began our ascent at 5 a.m. Sunday in perfect snow and weather conditions, taking three hours to reach the false summit at 11,700 ft. There we took a long picture taking and food break before crossing the saddle and arriving at the 12,226-ft. true summit at 9:15 a.m. From the summit we could see Mt. Rainier and Goat Rocks to the north, Mt. Hood to the south and Mt. St. Helens southwest of us. After an earned rest we began our descent which included two excellent glissades: one from summit to about 11,900 ft. and another from 11,700 ft. to base camp at 9000 ft. A great weekend was enjoyed by Obsidians John Hudson and Terry Lowells (leader) and Chemeketans Leal Lyday, Steve Chance and Steven Willhite.
