Trip Report

To begin our summit attempt we camped next to Crescent Glacier at 8200 ft. With the wind blowing we left our base camp at 1:30 a.m. under a starry sky. Walking with cramp-ons from the start, we started up the glacier. At around 3:00 a.m. we were joined by a beautiful pale yellow crescent moon in the eastern sky. We continued up at a steady pace and were joined a few hours later by a crimson sunrise. During the night the wind abated and though cold we had good climbing conditions.

We reached Pikers Peak at 5:40, and it was like walking into a blast freezer! We were able to cross over to the summit and reached it at 7:00 a.m. Mother nature rewarded us with a spectacular view of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and even Mt. Jefferson, but we couldn't loiter to enjoy our success, it was just too cold!

This group of climbers worked well together to make this a great mountain experience. I commend the 2 climbers who decided not to summit, because they did not feel well. That is a very hard decision to make after putting out all the effort in joining the climb and hiking to base camp.

The climbers who summited are: George Jobanek (Assistant Climb Leader), Linda Lamb, Virgil Lamb, Larry Dunlap, Larry Huff, Garry Degulis and Kim Sawyer (Climb Leader).
