Trip Report

Our hike began at the lower trail head for Mount Bailey, near the south shore of Diamond Lake. The trail begins climbing immediately up Hemlock Butte, and then onto the southeast ridge of Mount Bailey. We encountered snow shortly above the trail head, but the trail is well marked with blue diamonds for skiers, and we had no difficulty following the route. Cloudy weather and cool temperatures made for fairly firm snow and relatively good climbing conditions. There was a remarkable amount of snow on the higher portions of the mountain, which had unfortunately attracted a large group of noisy, stinking snowmobiles to the east face avalanche bowl. They were running up the east face as fast as they could go, then jumping their machines airborne up onto the true summit. The noise and smell were truly disruptive to any sort of wilderness experience. The trip leader suffered severe thigh cramps and settled for the south summit, while the rest of the group carried on a few hundred feet higher to the true summit. After a lunch and photos, we descended our route back to the cars with overcast skies and softening snow. We were back in Eugene by early evening. Climbers were guests Dave Hagen, Larry Huff and Scot Hunt, and Obsidians Bob Burnett, Dan Hagen, and leader Brian Hoyland.
