Trip Report

Borah is the tallest mountain in Idaho at 13,655' and was named for their Senator who worked so hard to preserve wilderness during his 33 years in the Senate.

We had a late start after summer camp breakfast which got us into weather problems later in the day. The route is continuously up and very steep with over 6500' elevation gain in less than 6 miles. Had to wait below the summit for a thunderstorm to slip by and then we dashed for the top, signed in on the Mazama Register and hurriedly descended a thousand feet before being drenched by a quick, severe lightning and rain storm. Beautiful views of the Sawtooths, White Clouds and all of Idaho from the summit ridge. We were in a safe position, but the electrically supercharged atmosphere was causing our ice axes to hum and vibrate, and the hair to stand straight out from the climbers' heads. A truly awesome electrical display!

Those who returned to camp very late, missed dinner by two hours, but were fed anyway by that great kitchen crew, included Sally Grosscup, Mike Hackett, Wes Prouty, and leader Gene Thaxton.
