Trip Report

To be the first on top of Oregon in 1992! That, and having a good time, was the goal of this New Year's Day winter ascent of Mt. Hood. Most trips on January 1 fail for one reason - weather. The plan was to take skis and camping gear by SnowCat to the top of the Palmer chair lift. By midnight everyone was warm in their tents watching the fireworks at Timberline Lodge. From 8700' it looked like the celebration of ants. You don't have to have champagne to be high on New Year's Eve! Sunrise was spectacular on the way to the summit. The final chute to the top was very icy, but everyone made it to the top. Clear, 17° F. with a 25 mph wind on the summit. That makes the wind chill factor minus 20° F. We were beaten to the summit by a strong, single climber who passed us on the way to the Hogsback. The hard part was skiing back to the Lodge with heavy packs. It proved too much for most of the group, who ended up carrying their skis most of the way down. But what a great way to celebrate 1992, and what great company to share it with. Climbers were Rich and Jan Anselmo, Ken Ball, Jerry Crosby, Lynn Farmer, Glenn Meares, Royal Murdock, John Pegg and Tom Donnelly (leader).
