Trip Report

In a month of unusually wet and cold weather we were fortunate to enjoy clear skies and warm temperatures for a day on Mt. Hood. At 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 23 eight of us joined the throng headed up the south side. We made steady progress and enjoyed the almost surreal beauty of the mountain bathed in moonlight and starlight. At about the 9000-ft. level two of our group opted to return to the cars while the rest of us pressed on. The Hogsback ridge was congested with many climbers ascending and descending, but conditions were good and we had no real problems finishing the climb through the lovely and aptly named Pearly Gates. It was near the summit that we heard two climbers had fallen from the north side. Though there were many people on top, most were understandably somewhat subdued. Our group took a brief rest and enjoyed the view then settled back down before the snow could soften too badly in the rapidly warming sun. We returned safely to the cars at about 1:00 p.m., tired but grateful for the day. Climbers were: Non-members Alicia Gano, John & Lisa Manotti, and Mark Slipp and Obsidians Benjamin Donner, Karl Kriegh (assistant leader), Van Likes and Doug Nelson (leader).
