Trip Report

This was the climb in search of a route. We started out from Eugene planning to climb the Wyeast route on Mt. Hood. But from observations at Timberline Lodge of the snow pack remaining on the mountain, we decided that the route was probably not in very good shape. We then went to bed planning to leave at 1:00 a.m. and climb West Crater Route. But the mixed weather and high winds made us change our minds again when we reached the Palmer chair lift. It was very cold, the wind was gusting up to 35 mph and there were dark clouds on the horizon. Because the West Crater Rim is not easy to back off of, we decided to go directly for the summit on the south-side route. At the bottom of Crater Rock, John Manotti, the assistant leader, took the three cold climbers on his rope team to the top while the other rope team waited for a slower climber. By 8:15 we had all reached the summit, taken some quick pictures, and headed down. On the descent, the weather improved, the wind stopped, and conditions were right for a great glissade. Climbers were Doug Nelson, Ken Ball, Brad Moehlman, Jan True, Lisa & John Manotti and leader John Pegg.
