Trip Report

Last week on Thursday, June 12, we drove to Mt. Hood but never started up the mountain because of snow, sleet, high wind, fog, inability to see the mountain and other reasons that climbers turn back.

11:30 a.m., Summit of Mt. Hood, Thursday, June 19: The view to the North is great. St. Helens to our left putting up great puffs of steam. Rainier in the center completely white. Adams on the right, white only near the top, the rest covered with dark ash.

After reaching the hogsback, where we were surprised to find only 8 climbers, we did the needed crampon and rope routine and proceeded to the summit without delay. Only about 25 climbers on this perfect day. Completing this climb of 10 hours were 8 first timers on Hood and leader: John Cecil, Paul "Hawkeye" Hawkins, Dick Hildreth, John Hudson, Betty Legris, Don Lytle, Mike Maloney, Mark Perrin and ldr. Lee Hatch.
