Trip Report

Obsidians Sam Miller (leader) and Chris Steele (co-leader) completed a fine climb of Mt. Hood via the Sunshine route. This was Miller's 15th Hood climb and Steele's second. We camped on Elliot Glacier at 8,000 feet, departed for the summit at 4 a.m., and arrived on top five hours later. Along the way we crossed several crevasse fields, negotiated the 'shrund, and enjoyed a beautiful day. The climb was challenging but not as perilous as Clint Eastwood's climb in "The Eiger Sanction". Boy, isn't Clint terrific? On the descent we missed Cooper Spur and descended a bit farther to the west. Despite the prolonged slog back to camp, both climbers were pleased with the trip and ready to accept endorsements from major manufacturers of outdoor equipment (K-mart, Fred Meyer, etc.).
