walk begins in historic Masonic Cemetery where we will note the number of early white settlers in this area long home to the kalapuya Indian tribe, walk thru the hills, skirting Laurelwood Golf Course, and Hendricks Rhododendron garden. We will have a moderate and interesting walk

Trip Report

A forecast of a cold morning and a temperature of 33 degrees at 9 o'clock led to a couple of cancellations, but an intrepid group began an exploration of the Masonic Cemetery, locating the grave of Eugene Skinner, who in 1840s laid out the streets of the new city. As we walked through the cemetery, we noted the names of early settlers in the 1800s which are now names of Eugene streets. The good work of the cemetery board of directors to maintain the facility was appreciated. Our hike took us thru the local neighborhood, and onto the paths of Laurelwood Golf Course, then via the Ribbon Trail, to the Rhododendrum gardens and back to the cemetery. We remained dry and comfortable, making for a very pleasant ramble thru the University neighborhood
