Trip Report

The trip began at the Whitewater parking lot on Saturday afternoon in a fog. The party started up the trail, into worsening weather with a number of persons leaving the Park. The rain dampened the pace, but the people made it into the Park in time to pitch tents and enjoy the windblown fog. No one seemed particularly excited to be up at 1 a.m. for a climb on Whitewater glacier. In addition, there had been snowfall the night before and all the rocks were frosted in whiteness. Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. breakfast was served, and plans for the climb aborted. The group did not have adequate and dry gear to attempt the mountain (tempt) in windy snowy conditions. As the weather came and left, the group packed up and headed down the muddy trail. A short stop at the Marion Forks Inn and a ride with the Labor Day weekend crowds brought the seven to Eugene. Ken Ball, Bert Ewing, Lee Hatch, Wayne Hatch, Jack Nitzel, Bob Walden, and Steve Ross, leader.
