Trip Report

We all met at Goat Peak at around 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, after a refreshing hike up through Pamelia Lake and a swim at Shale Lake. We all arose bright-eyed and bushy tailed at 12:15 a.m., ate and headed up the south ridge at l:10 a.m. and arrived at the red saddle at around 7:15 a.m. The snow field was looking rather challenging, se I chose to go up through the chimney, below the south peak and traverse across the saddle between the two peaks to a point below the north peak, and on up to the summit, using fixed lines all the way.

I would have preferred to have a belay point on the chimney, but I was occupied further up the summit. This way we were able to avoid any snow work and all of the rock fall that comes screaming off the two peaks. We had an uneventful climb up and down the summit, and we all left the Red Saddle at 2:30 p.m. We then all arrived at Goat Peak safe and sound, packed up and headed off for Shale Lake, where most of us had a very refreshing swim, cooked dinner, and had a most comfortable and deserved sleep.

Arose bright and early Sunday morning, hiked out to the cars, and drove to Marion Forks, where we all had beer, champagne and omelets for breakfast. Those along were Chriss Walters, Nancy White, Dan Bates, Ewart and Bruce Baldwin, Henreitta Richmond, Bill McWhorter, Jan Baker, Gene Thaxton, Velma Shirk, Dick Hildreth, Dot Leland, and your faithful, loveable leader, Kevin McManigal.
