Description:

Working towards your 10 peaks, but haven't seen an Obsidian Mt. McLoughlin climb? Now is your chance. Mt. McLoughlin is considered a non-technical climb, but at over 10 miles with 4,000 feet of elevation gain, this should still get some hearts racing. The climb will entail some trail, some scrambling above treeline, and a beautiful view on a clear day.

A few logistics. Planning on starting the hike at 7am from the McLoughlin trailhead. The trailhead is close to 4 hours of travel time from Eugene. I'll encourage the group to depart Saturday afternoon, grab dinner in Roseburg, and continue up towards the trailhead. We'll meet at a yet-to-be-determined campsite for the night.

Disclaimer: The trip leader has not yet done this climb. The leader will also be leading Thielsen the day prior, so will not be leaving from Eugene with the group.

Trip Report

The leader was surprised how much interest the non-technical climb generated. Full almost before it was posted, a group of 11 Obsidians managed to all find each other the night before at a nearby campsite. A big thank you to Chris for finding reservable sites close to the trailhead. Leaving the trailhead on a near weather-perfect day the group found our way to the spacious summit. Taking summit treats seriously, we had enough to feed three times our number. We happened to run into three Mountaineers that four of us had seen on Thielsen the day prior. All of the group made it down and managed to avoid the far too common mistake of going off the south (wrong) side of the Mountain. All in all, a solid day on the mountain, and a trip that may be made far more often if it didn't involve a 3.5 hour drive each way.
