Trip Report

Four intrepid Obsidians celebrated the beginning of the monsoon season by climbing McLoughlin in a storm. Arrived at Fourmile Lake Saturday afternoon where Jan led a 6-mile "warmup" hike and futile mushroom hunt to Long Lake (since she hadn't done enough miles on her run that morning). Camped at the trailhead in a steady rain, where upon the county gendarmes arrived to inform us that it hadn't been raining enough to allow the campfire we had laboriously built. Enjoyed a night of pelting rain, loud wind, and foraging deer. Started out early Sunday morning in steady rain, which changed slowly to snow, accompanied by clouds and howling winds at timberline. Found a partially buried camera, apparently from an ill-fated climb in 1947 (photos to be developed later). Undaunted (well, only slightly daunted), pushed on to the summit by early afternoon, rewarded by a view of the inside walls of the lookout. Brief sunshine and nice views on the way back. Dinner at Mexia's at Canyonville, a unique experience. Altogether, an unusually interesting McLoughlin climb, demonstrating that this mountain can be a challenge in certain conditions. The intrepideurs were Gene Thaxton, Fran Gnose, Jan Baker and leader Bill McWhorter.
