Trip Report

The Mt. McLoughlin climb began in 100° temperatures on Friday, July 12. We car-pooled from SEHS park blocks to the trailhead south of the mountain. After the group settled in for the night, we had a quiet and peaceful camp near the trailhead. Saturday morning was clear and sunny. The thermometer was already rising when we hit the trail at 8 am. We had a leisurely hike and soon spread out into groups walking at different paces. We re-grouped for a snack near Timberline, and then split up for the final trudge up the south-east ridge. The mosquitoes were a minor distraction. On the upper part of the mountain, large snow fields remained on either side of the ridge, but the Climbers’ Trail was melted out. Fastest climbers were Doug Quirk and Van Likes, who made the summit shortly after 10. Josh Ladau brought an ice axe and chose to climb the steep snow field on the south side of the peak; he made the summit shortly after Doug and Van. The rest of the group (Dan Bates, Wojtek Szalecki and Megan Wright) kept a steady pace and were all on top by noon. The temperature was in the 80’s on the summit with very little wind. We enjoyed lunch while basking in the sunshine. Hazy conditions limited our view. The hike back to the cars was rocky and tedious but uneventful. Dan, Josh and I stopped briefly to marvel at a small meadow full of Scarlet Gilia flowers. As we were leaving at 4 pm, a thunderstorm sprinkled on us. Leader: Brian Hoyland.
