Trip Report

The rain started almost exactly at 3:00 pm just as our group began introductions at SEHS parking lot: a hint that the weather might not be great. A dry drive to Medford, supper at Denny’s, and then we arrived at the McLoughlin trailhead just at dark and were greeted by a steady drizzle. The tents went up rather fast despite not being able to find my flashlight and the difficulty of driving tent pegs into the parking lot. Morning came, the drizzle stopped, the mist hung on and the wind kept moving it about. A few vistas as we climbed - Mt. Shasta peeking out above the clouds, blue lakes bordered by green forest - and a chilly wind that encouraged more layers of clothing. We all reached the summit by noon and were above the clouds for most of our lunch. The ice that remained on the rocks from the night’s drizzle reminded us that summer was gone. It was fun going down, stopping for pizza and being together. A nicer and more interesting group has never climbed a mountain. Another reason for climbing mountains than "It’s there" - "It’s there with such good company". The company was: David Becker, Steve Cash, Ruthie Kanagy, Ron Ladigin, Peggy Lee Mathas, and Royal Murdock (leader).
