Trip Report

10.00 a.m. Saturday, three people collected their gear and left Eugene in one camper van headed south for Mt. McLoughlin. We stopped once in Chemult for a sandwich. Around 2:30 p.m. we arrived at the trailhead, too early to camp, so we visited several lakes in the vicinity such as Four Mile, Fish, and Lake-of-the-Woods. Later we came back to the trailhead, fixed a meal and talked to various sore-footed people coming off of the mountain. It was hot, around 85 degrees, so we decided to get an early start to beat the heat, so we turned in early. At 4:00 a.m. we got up, ate a hasty snack and with flashlights in hand hit the trail. By five it started to get light, somewhat; by five-thirty we turned off the lights and continued on; by six-thirty we were rock-hopping and making hard work of it. David Lewinsohn was on top by 9:00; Ewart Baldwin and I (leader Merle Traudt) took somewhat longer - 9:45 to be exact. It was a gorgeous day; the view was perfect! We were the first ones up, but there were lots of people behind us who found the heat something else. We agreed it was a nice climb.
