Trip Report

This is by far the best time of year to climb Mt. McLoughlin. The drive down afforded such views as a buck deer crossing the highway near Willamette Pass, Fall color in the Ft. Klamath Valley, Golden Aspen trees along highway 140, and first glimpse of Mt. McLoughlin with a thin bit of snow on the north slope. Road 3661 was in good shape to the trail head where we car/tent camped and enjoyed the convenience of two new rest rooms.

After a frosty night we crossed the dry canal and started up the 5½ mile trail at 6:20 a.m. Sunday. We enjoyed the walk with lots of snack breaks. We trekked through some light snow on the upper ridge to reach the summit at 11:40. A welcoming committee of one was formed by Lee Hatch as he charged to the top well ahead of the party. After lunch, summit book formalities, and a crisp view of Mt. Shasta, we headed down and reached the cars about 3:45 p.m. Good snacks at the "Cattle Crossing Cafe" in Ft. Klamath gave us energy to make it home by 8:30 p.m.

The eight jovial and cool climbers were Donn Chase, Lee Hatch, Henrietta Richmond, Rick Sanders, Velma Shirk, Connie and Millard Thomas, and leader Wes Prouty.

The July Bulletin is online now.
