Description:

Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee signs. Look for the new fee box by the gate. I'll try to have my car in the row below so that it is easy for us to meet, sign up. Etc. We will look for quotes on benches and discover the new interpretive nature installations to celebrate Ogden Nash’s poem, “Lines in Praise of a Date Made Praiseworthy Solely by Something Very Nice that Happened to It. ” The mileage is an estimate but I plan to include South Meadow, Water Garden, Buford Trail, the South Boundary Trail, the Zigzag Trail and Incense Trail and perhaps the Swing Trail. Hike should take around 2 hours. I plan to end the amble where it is convenient for any who want to go on the summit can do so. If you have questions, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net If you don’t have a Lane County pass allow time to purchase one at the pay station. Credit/Debit cards only. Consider purchasing an annual pass from Friends of Buford Park. Allow 2 weeks. You can also buy one at the Arboretum office.

Trip Report

The inspiration for an amble on April 12 was Ogden Nash’s poem, "Lines in Praise of a Date Made Praiseworthy Solely by Something Very Nice That Happened to It." No matter how one tries to make it rhyme, April twelve, April twealth, or the twelfth of Abriel; it is a favorite day regardless of the weather. April 12th was a perfect rainy day for us to enjoy the wildflowers on the Arboretum trails. On the Incense Cedar Trail, calypso orchids spread out from the Mike Shirk memorial bench with his quote, ‘It isn’t spring until the calypso orchids are in bloom.’
