Trip Report

After seemingly weeks of continuous rain and more rain, Saturday, March 19 was clear, sunny, warm and the harbinger hopefully of a beautiful Willamette Valley spring. Eight Obsidians and one nonmember comprised the first work party at the 118-acre Mt. Pisgah Arboretum located in the corner of the Howard Buford Recreation Area on the southeast outskirts of Eugene. Some of us transplanted small trees from the holding beds to the entrance area where others had prepared holes in designated locations. Another group worked to remove a large oak stump from the same area. After lunch in the picnic group Friends of Mt. Pisgah Arboretum's president, Theodore Palmer, who works Saturdays year round at the Arboretum, conducted an interesting walking tour pointing out many varieties of early spring wildflowers. We thoroughly enjoyed our day spent "next door" to Eugene. We invite you all to join us on Saturday, May 7 (please note your calendar) when we'll help prepare further for the Annual Arboretum Wildflower Show on Sunday, May 15. Obsidians John and Pete Cecil, Dallas Cole, Margaret Crosland, Helen Hughes, Anne Montgomery, Marshall Pallett and leader Joe Lowry were joined by nonmember Ruth Coffman on the splendid outing.
