  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 12/21/2018

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box. The actual solstice is at 2:22 pm. Sunset is 4:37 pm and moonrise is 4:06. Depending on the weather, I may change the mileage/departure time so look for an update the day before. If we are surprised with clear skies, we will join a crowd of solstice hikers looking for the sun rays to light up the Mt. Pisgah Sighting Pedestal. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions. If you don’t have a Lane County pass allow time to purchase one with Debit/Credit card (no cash) at the pay station by trailhead. To buy an annual pass and support the trails, check out the websites for Friends of the Buford Park ($50.00) or Mt. Pisgah Arboretum. ($50.00/$40.00 for seniors).

Trip Report

We watched the cold moon rise about the foothills around 4:15 and then turned around to enjoy the colorful sunset. Not only did the rays light up the pedestal slot but if one knelt down, the moon could also be seen. it will be 2029 before the cold moon is again close the to the solstice. So it's not a once-in-a-lifetime event, but still, you don't see this too often.
