Trip Report

Six climbers left Obsidian summer camp (White River Campground) at 11 a.m. We arrived at Camp Schurman (9600') at about 7 p.m. We got up at midnight, but didn't get started until l:30 a.m. Peggy John decided not to climb, due to illness. Colin Macdonald started but turned back shortly with equipment problems. As the four of us ascended, we had a beautiful view of the lights of Seattle, and later we could see the lights of Enumclaw.

We had no wind, only gentle breezes at times. We climbed around huge crevasses and jumped some narrow ones. Others we crossed on narrow snow bridges. We arrived at the summit before 9:30 a.m. and were back at Camp Schurman about 1 p.m. We were all back at our summer camp by 6 p.m., in time for dinner.

It was a beautiful day, and we could see mountains from Hood on the south to Baker and Shuksan on the north. From the summit, we could see St. Helens, but we were about 7½ hours too early to see another eruption.

Except for the leader, it was the first climb of Rainier for all summit climbers. Climbers were: Dick Moffitt, Kevin McManigal, Steve John and Norman Benton, leader.
