Trip Report

We left Eugene at 9:00 a.m. Saturday intending to climb Mt. Shasta on Sunday. Even though the weather forecast was for sunny and warm weather for the weekend, the rain began falling about 4:00 in the afternoon and was still falling at 8:00 Sunday morning.

This cancelled our climb for the day so we packed up and took the short drive to Castle Crags State Park where we hiked to the crags. These are pinnacles of granite with the dominant feature of the area being Castle Dome. Only Gene and David climbed the dome, the rest of us being content to watch from below.

Three of our group then headed for home and work Monday, the rest staying another night with hopes of better weather and a climb on Monday.

We started our day with stars and moon both out at 4:00 a.m. The first were on the summit by noon, the slower and older being an hour or so later. All were back at the cars by 6:00 having climbed over 6000 feet and to an elevation of 14,000 feet. Most had sunburns and all a great climb.

Climbers were Susan Anderson, Margaret Crosland, Sue Doolittle, Gary Doolittle, David Hatch, Lee Hatch (leader), and Gene Thaxton. Workers were Chris Anderson, John Cecil and Betty Legris.
