Trip Report

On Friday we climbed 2,000 ft., all on snow, from the trailhead to base camp at 9,000 ft. We left base camp at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday and summitted, 14,162 ft., at 11:30 a.m. Crampons were used and necessary on the ascent (Avalanche Gulch-Red Banks route). The snow had softened enough on the descent that excellent glissading was enjoyed by all, losing 3,000 ft. + of elevation in a matter of minutes. We arrived back at base camp about 3:00 p.m. and enjoyed a leisurely afternoon and evening and returned to the cars at noon on Sunday. Our weatherman called this one correctly: clear, with a little wind. Our environment of snow, ice and rock was in extremely sharp contrast to the lush green of the valley below, and at night the stars were brilliant. The lights of the city of Dunsmuir (immediately below) to the city of Redding (over 100 miles to the south) were easily seen! Enjoying this climb and time together were Jan and Rich Anselmo, Jerry Crosby, John Pegg, Chris Shuraleff, and leader Glenn Meares.
