Description:

The most fun you'll have on a mountain. The annual tradition on Mother's Day on Mt. St. Helens is to wear a dress while you climb. EVERYONE wears a dress. If the weather is good, there will be hundreds of people in dresses on the mountain. We'll leave Saturday afternoon, pick up our permits in Cougar, WA, stay the night in Cougar, WA. Then Sunday, we'll be at the trail head by 6am to start. This trip requires the purchase of a $22 permit.
This trip will be weather dependent.

Trip Report

Due to a dubious weather report, we decided to move the trip to Saturday, May 11 instead of Sunday. Ivan, Maria, Beth, and Shellie, and I met at the trailhead at 5:30am and were hiking by 5:50am. The mountain was crowded and had a festive, party-like feel. We heard from a ranger that there were 600 permits issued that day. The weather was partly cloudy and about 40 degrees when we began.
Our group was well matched, no one was too fast or slow. We summitted exactly 5 hours later at about 11am. There were at least 100 people at the summit. We never used crampons or snowshoes, though we carried them. The skies were clear, we had an AWESOME view down into the crater and of Adams, Rainier, and Hood.
On the way down, we glissaded a lot. The snow conditions were perfect! It took us 2 hrs, 45 min to descend. The weather stayed warm and clear.
It was really a perfect. day.
