Trip Report

Weather couldn't have been better with sun 99% of day and almost no wind. Snow and lack of wind made face masks and goggles unnecessary. Cumulus in the crater periodically obstructed view of spectacular 1980 destruction, but all got the view. Snow lip on interior of crater rim gave a false sense of security. Frequent rockfall inside the crater stimulated the imagination of two of the more daring party members. Ed and Michael are this very minute planning to summit from an interior crater route. They are having special equipment designed for this ascent which resembles jointed full-body casts. They can be used before and after the climb! Many wildflowers seen below 4800 feet and some above. The friendly and able climbers added much to the entire experience. "Discovering Mt. St. Helens" by Scott Shane was a good resource for this awesome geologic area. Climbers were Dennis Allison, Michael Cooper, Sandy Diaz, Dana Gardner, Janet Leavitt, Ed Lovegren, Kathy Perkins and Carol Horvath (leader).
