Trip Report

The group met at S.E.H.S. at 12 noon on Saturday. We agreed to meet at the Climber's Bivouac to set up a car camp. This area is adequate, but not very quiet or picturesque except for the mountain. We started the climb at 7:30 a.m. to try and beat the heat from the sun. The weather was sunny but pleasant with a nice breeze when we got out of the timber. Rain the previous week kept dust and ash to a minimum. There was a group of approximately 30 young grammar school kids from Vancouver, Canada, climbing on this day. They were a happy group, but for the record … us "older adults" were huffing and puffing much less than these young spuds! We reached the summit lip at 11:30 a.m. There we sat for an hour to enjoy a view that still amazes one even after having seen it before. "Humble" is a good way to describe the feeling. While viewing the crater, a huge rockfall occurred. After a quick lesson for party members on how to dance down the scree, our group hiked back. We then made the usual stop at Fuddruckers for hamburgers and milk shakes. If you are in good physical condition and can climb uphill for 4.5 miles, this is a great experience not to be missed. It is not a technical climb, so think about it for next year! A wonderful weekend for Bryan and Doug Appel and Jan and Rich Anselmo (leaders).
