Trip Report

When I originally planned this trip, I expected that it would be a two-day backpack/ski trip. This year's unseasonably warm winter made it possible to drive all the way to the trailhead of the climber's trail: this is normally impossible until mid-May. Five climbers and skiers car-camped at the trailhead Saturday evening and headed for the summit at 6:15 a.m. Sunday. We carried skis all the way to the summit under cloudy skies, wondering if the sun would appear long enough to soften the snow for the ski descent. The sun did cooperate, and came out about mid-morning. We reached the summit about 11:30; the summit views were spectacular, with the dome steaming, and good views of mountains from Rainier to Jefferson. The ski down was a telemarker's dream come true - relatively firm snow with no suncups, and just soft enough to get a good edge. The three skiers explored the bowls, and periodically stopped and enjoyed the war-whoops of the two glissaders. We stopped for lunch part way down, just to prolong the wonderful descent, and were back at the cars by mid-afternoon. A great time was had by all: Ruby Seitz, Bill Roisining, Scott Ward, Don McLaughlin and Susan Sullivan (leader).
