Trip Report

This is a marvelous day climb that does not require hauling 50-lb. packs into a high elevation base camp. However, the price you pay for this lightweight, carefree climbing is the overnight stay at the Climbers’ Bivouac. Last year we suffered through the noise and bright headlights of late night arrivals. This year, however, we found excellent camping sites in the woods away from the parking lot and actually slept pretty well. We got an early start - 7 am, just after daybreak - to beat the heat, but as it turned out, it never got hot. In fact, it was breezy the whole way up, and at the summit it was downright freezing! But our 4,500-ft. climb did reward us with good views of the crater, Spirit Lake and Mt. Adams. The views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier were both a bit hazy. A special treat this year was the abundance of unusually large, tasty huckleberries on the lower part of the climb. Joining me (Bill Montgomery, leader) were Howard Feinman, Josh Ladau, Mike Landes and Bob Lemon.
