Trip Report

A small group of three headed down to Diamond Lake on Friday night to enjoy a beautiful, clear mosquito-free evening on the east shore. By morning clouds had begun to form as we headed up the trail at 7 a.m. By the time we hit tree line a cold wind was blowing and the summit was not visible. As we reached the west ridge we started to got the real brunt of the wind but were rewarded with some eerie views of the formations on the north side of the mountain.

As we neared the summit pinnacle we were able to get some beautifully clear views of Shasta, Crater Lake and Mt. McLoughlin through the clouds. The belay to the top was quick and from there were able to get intermittent views of the area. We had lunch on the top. This was the first tine on Thielsen for both Joe Turner and Jim Russell. Hopefully the future climbs of this mountain will be a bit clearer. Leader was John Jacobsen.
