Trip Report

Because all previous climbs of Thielsen by the leader had been from Diamond Lake, it was decided to explore new country and camp at Thielsen Creek on the Northeast side of the mountain. After a five mile pack to camp and setting up for the night, we took the Crest Trail north three miles to scout out the Howlock Mt. area. Not being sure which of the three peaks was the summit and with the shortage of remaining daylight, we thought it best to postpone Howlock Mt. for another trip and returned to camp.

We started from camp a little after 8:00 and were on the summit in warm and cloudless weather but back at camp the clouds had moved in for the day. Reached the cars at 6:00 p.m. after a good weekend and a nice climb. Climbers Ed Lovegren, Jerry Crosby, and John Englehart had a great weekend with first time backpacker and climber, Garry Weber, and leader Lee Hatch.
