Trip Report

Arriving at the trailhead parking lot we were surprised to find it nearly full. A straggler informed us that 35 boy scouts and parents were ahead of us on the trail. We set off at 7:15 with a firm resolve and a few nagging doubts about elbow room on the narrow summit. It was a quick and quiet fivesome up to the base of the pinnacle, overtaking about half the Roseburg scouts on the ascent. The other group had a fixed line in place and were using prusiks to ferry everyone to the top. We fixed a belay in a different area and attained the summit by 11:15. It was a beautiful day. A light breeze kept it cool and a smorgasbord of clouds added to the panorama. The scout group and their adult companions were friendly and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Our group had a leisurely stay on the summit and then rappelled down. Making good time descending on the scree, we arrived at the trailhead by 4 p.m. The weather had been slowly darkening on our descent and driving home we encountered intermittent showers with a few thunderstorms mixed in. Congratulations to assistant leader John Pegg who bagged his 10th peak. Other happy climbers were Setha Burns, Royal Murdock, Barbara Schulz, and leader Rick Ahrens.
