Trip Report

The leader wanted to make this climb more leisurely, and more interesting, than the usual one-day long trek from Diamond Lake. After meeting for lunch at Diamond Lake Resort, we parked at the horse corral (the trailhead for trail no. 1448). After a 4½ mile hike via Tipsoo-Howlock Mtn., and Thielsen Creek trails, we arrived at Thielsen Creek camp (elev. 6900').

At 5:20 a.m. Sunday the climbing party of nine headed south on the PCNST (Shirley stayed in camp as equipment guard). The deep snow, some 5' deep, slowed us down considerably until we reached the top of the west ridge and the regular climbing route. We reached the saddle at 10:30 a.m. where we were greeted by a party of 15 YCC climbers. After a two-hour wait we belayed our entire party to the summit. A 3:15 p.m. departure got us back to base camp at 6:00 p.m. Five of us returned to the cars at 8:30 p.m., signed out at the Ranger Station, and greeted the remainder of the party at 9:30 p.m. A midnight snack was enjoyed in 0akridge before arriving in Eugene about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Shirley Driver guarded camp while the following climbed: Dot Leland, Bev, Lloyd & Michael Lindley, Glenn Meares, Connie & Millard Thomas, Merle Traudt and leader Wes Prouty.
