Trip Report

A steady rain Friday night did not deter us from climbing Three Fingered Jack Saturday, August 18. Morning clouds gave way to blue skies as we reached the summit. We were more than fortunate with the weather, for this was a special climb - Wayne Hatch came from Los Angeles to join his brother David in spreading their father's ashes on his favorite mountain. It would have been impossible for all who knew Lee Hatch to be on Jack's tiny summit, but all were present in spirit and in our thoughts. I could fill several pages of this newsletter with remembrances of Lee but space does not permit it - see the summit book for our reflections. Please see also Elsie Hatch's letter in the newsletter.

John Pegg and Rick Moon joined me the next day, Sunday, August 19, for a climb of Mt. Washington. Again the weather held and we stayed dry, although the pinnacle was often in the clouds. We ascended the standard, north ridge route. Our climb makes a good argument for keeping party sizes small - three people can move quickly and efficiently. This was Rick's first climb up a rocky pinnacle (he'd previously climbed Middle and South Sisters) and he did a fine job. Put this climb on your calendar for next year - these two mountains make for a great weekend. George Jobanek, leader.
