Trip Report

Our small group of three chose an alternative route up 7,794-ft. Mt. Washington. We left Hortense Lake trailhead at 7:30 a.m. and followed Hortense Trail to an un-maintained climbers’ trail, following the north bank of Cache Creek to the base of the East Face. We climbed the steep, trail-less scree up the North-East Face and joined the standard North Ridge route. We waited briefly at the Notch while a rope team climbed ahead of us. We were all on the summit by 1:30 p.m. for a lunch in the sun. Belayed down-climbing and one singlerope rappel put us back in the Notch. We were able to descend the east side quickly and were on the trail by 4:30 and back to the cars by 7:00. This route is recommended only for its scenic, wilderness beauty. Although the hiking mileage is less than that of the standard route, the trail-less, cross-country travel made hiking time nearly the same as the standard route. Climbers were Doug Nelson, Doug Quirk and leader Brian Hoyland.
