Trip Report

This trip was originally scheduled for 9/13/03, but at that time the pass and all side roads were closed to people other than fire fighters. On Friday evening 10/3/03 the group gathered at the PCT access on the southern side of Ray Benson Snow Park. The fires had not spread to this area, but a strong smell of burned material could be detected. All rose at 6:00 a.m. on 10/4/03 and departed at 7:00 a.m. for the mountain. We awaited daylight due to many hunters in the area. Arrived at the summit pinnacle at 11:00 a.m. The leader set a rope to the rappel point and climbers climbed to this location. The leader then took the ropes to the summit and the climbers followed. All were on the summit by 12:30, and stayed for about ½ hour. There was a lot of activity on this day on the mountain. Six groups of climbers were on the mountain with a total of 20 people (including this party). The descent went without problems and started down the scree field about 2:00 p.m. Several large rocks were sent down the scree field by the party behind us, that narrowly missed our party. The rest of the trip back to the trailhead was uneventful. Departed for home about 5:30 p.m. Climbers were Ken Horton, Karen Frost, and leader Bill Johnson.
