Trip Report

Except for a slight error in using the Patjens Lake Trail to the cut-off trail on Saturday, the climb went well. We camped part way up the climb trail Saturday night. The party was up before 5:00 a.m. and we were on the climb trail before 6:00 a.m.

After arriving at the saddle about 10:30 Dan set up the belay. A party of eight Mazamas arrived, and under the leadership of Bob Rindt and Marty, they rigged a hand line next to our belay and we had excellent cooperation during the technical part of the climb. Obsidians, Mazamas, and a maverick party of three were on the summit shortly after 11:00 a.m.; we rigged a rappell line from just below the summit to the lower rappell point. All the Obsidians and Mazamas used that line. We all descended "The Chimney" via the Mazama hand line. They considered it faster than rappelling for large parties, but I question that.

After refilling our water bottles at the last snow field on the way down, we picked up our pack frames and returned to the cars in time for dinner at the Rustic Skillet. Ideal climbing weather was enjoyed by Ewart Baldwin, Dan Chamness (leader), Kirk Erickson, Jane Hackett, Robert Lynch, and leader Wes Prouty.
